The Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory (RMSMT) is pleased to announce our 2027 Annual Meeting, which will take place on March 26–27, 2027 at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO. This will be a joint meeting with the Rocky Mountain chapter of the American Musicological Society and the Society for Ethnomusicology Southwestern Chapter. Presentations will occur in person, with hybrid attendance available for the business meeting only.

This year the Chapter will meet jointly with the American Musicological Society, Rocky Mountain Chapter and the Society for Ethnomusicology Southwestern Chapter.

Decision Notification Date on or before December 7, 2026.  Written confirmation of invitation acceptance required no later than December 24, 2026. Final list of invited and confirmed presenters to be made by December 30, 2026.

We are soliciting proposals on any topic related to music theory, analysis, or theory pedagogy. Proposals may be for any of the following formats:

• Paper (20 minutes)
• Special session on a single topic (three 20-minute papers)
• Roundtable discussion (90 minutes)

The guidelines for proposals are as follows:

• Authors should submit a PDF proposal of no more than 500 words, including any footnotes or endnotes. A mathematical equation counts as one word.
  • A special session proposal may submit 3 500-word proposals combined into one document, delineated with appropriate titles.
• A maximum of four pages of supplementary materials (such as musical examples, diagrams, and selected bibliography) may be appended; these pages will not be counted within the 500-word limit.
• The proposal must include the title of the paper but exclude the author’s name and any other identifying information. Authors are responsible for ensuring that metadata also does not include identifying information.
• 250-word abstracts will be requested for accepted proposals at a later date.

Proposals must be submitted at the following link no later than November 14, 2026, 11:59 pm.

Proposal submissions must be in PDF format and made through the Google Form (requires a Google account).

There will be an award for the best student paper presented at the conference. Students who wish to be considered should declare their interest on the form above and will be asked to submit a PDF of the complete paper (with graphics and/or other supporting materials) by February 1.

We are pleased to also announce that Mark Rabideau of UC Denver will be our keynote speaker this year.

Mark Rabideau is a frequent speaker on how fostering individual and collective creativity can help address the world’s most pressing problems, delivering talks at Juilliard, Curtis, Yale, and the American University in Cairo – where he was named Distinguished Visiting Researcher – and teaching courses and workshops in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

The breadth of Mark’s creative spirit is evidenced by the transdisciplinary work he has produced, including the GRAMMY-winning album STILLPOINT (New Amsterdam Records), The Global Musician Workshop, a partnership with Silkroad, Live from Smoke, a radio show from NYC’s upper-westside, Worlds End, an original work with the American Repertory Ballet, and the made-for-PBS documentaries Awadagin Pratt: Black in America (winner of Audience Choice for Best Documentary, Sedona International Film Festival). UNQUIET, Mark’s current record project explores the interior experience of those struggling with bipolar disorder.

He is the author of Creating the Artist Revolutionary (Rowman & Littlefield, 2018) – recipient of the 2018 Society for Arts Entrepreneurship Educators’ Innovative Arts Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award – and is senior editor of Emerging Fields in Music (Routledge Publishing).

Mark was named to The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (2024) and The Recording Arts Academy (2023) and is Past-President of the College Music Society (2021-2023).

Mark serves as Senior Associate Dean and Professor of Music within the College of Arts & Media at the University of Colorado Denver and Affiliate Faculty within the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Conference Location

The conference will be held in Skinner Library & Frasier Hall, 1710 9th Ave.  Parking should be available on the sidewalks on 9th and 10th Avenue.  Paid parking is available on 10th Street (City) and in the parking lot on 10th Avenue and 17th street.  There is an App you need to download to pay for parking in the parking lot and signs are there to provide instruction.

The conference hotel will be the DoubleTree by Hilton Greeley at Lincoln Park.  I do not yet have any information regarding conference rates so watch for more information in the near future.

The nearest international airport is Denver International Airport approximate 1 hour south of Greeley.  There are no public transportation options from the airport to Greeley but Uber and Lyft are both available.  I will be providing contact information to everyone who is participating in or attending the conference a couple of months before so that you can coordinate airport arrivals if you wish in order to share ride costs.
