Program Overview

The Studio Art program combines in-depth studio and classroom exploration with professional instruction, giving students the space to experiment with materials and ideas while building the technical and conceptual foundation essential for life as an artist or creative professional.

Students work hands-on across painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and integrated digital media — developing materials literacy, tool and machine skill, and technical fluency across traditional and digital approaches alike. Whether headed toward graduate study, a professional studio practice, or a career in the creative industries, students graduate ready to make, think, and communicate visually at a professional level.

µÛÍõ»áËù

New Art & Design students complete Foundations coursework (Drawing, Contemporary Art History, 2D Design, 3D Design) before beginning advanced studio art studies.

µÛÍõ»áËù

This four year plan is a recommended schedule to complete this bachelor’s degree in 4 years. Courses are subject to availability. Students must consult with their major advisor to receive information on any additional graduation requirements and course sequence guidance.

Why Choose Studio Art at µÛÍõ»áËù

Learn from Working Artists

Every studio faculty member is a practicing artist as well as an educator — you're learning technique and critique from people actively exhibiting and making work, not just teaching about it.

Showcase Your Work

Present your work in a professional context through practicum coursework and studio application experience, building the portfolio and process you'll need for grad school, industry work, or an independent studio practice.

Discover Your Creative Potential

Develop both the craft and conceptual foundation essential for life as an artist — experimenting with materials and ideas alongside practicing artists and scholars.

From Foundations to Focus

Every Studio Art student begins with a shared first-year Foundations sequence in drawing, 2D design, and 3D design, gaining hands-on experience with materiality and contemporary approaches to making. From there, students explore and eventually focus across six areas — painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and integrated digital media — working closely with a faculty advisor to build a course of study suited to their own visual language. The program culminates in The Working Artist: Practicum, giving students hands-on, career-connected experience and entrepreneurial training before they graduate.

Wired for Success

"I love this class so much. I am so sad the semester is over. My friend Sam Remington and I are going to try to set up a home metalsmithing studio because we don't want to have to give it up."

Research Roundup: American Metal

"Before they're ever used in artwork, the materials themselves bring history and individual stories with them, and that's one of the things that fascinates me and inspires me when I work creatively."
