The 2023 Lunar New Year will begin on January 22 and will mark the Year of the Rabbit until the 15th day signaling the end with the Lantern Festival. The Lunar New Year is a major holiday in East and Southeast Asian cultures, such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Korea, and many others. It is a time for families to gather, exchange gifts, and celebrate with traditional foods and customs.

Submitted to the United Nations General Assembly by Eleanor Roosevelt with the words 鈥淲e stand today at the threshold of a great event both in the life of the United Nations and in the life of mankind. This declaration may well become the international Magna Carta for all men everywhere.鈥� the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted on December 10, 1948.

Veterans Day, recognized annually on November 11, is dedicated to celebrating and honoring all who have served in any one of the branches of the United States Armed Forces. The significance of the date refers to the November 11, 1918, signing of an armistice on the 鈥�11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month鈥� that ended World War I. In 1954, with the amendment of the Act of 1938, Congress would change the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Tuesday, November 8 is Election day and is the time to make your voice heard. The road to voting rights has been a long and hard fought one for many groups in America. While the Constitution allowed white male citizens over the age of 21 the right to vote, many other Americans were denied that same right.

Observed annually during the month of November, Native American Heritage Month celebrates the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Indigenous people while also raising awareness of the historical challenges, injustices, and persecution they have suffered, and still encounter today.

Halloween is stitched with cultural, religious, and occult traditions, referring to ancient Celtic festivals. It starts with the Celts celebrating the end of the harvest season on October 31, and on November 1, the Celts celebrate their new year, known as Samhain. To commemorate the event, Celts built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes.

In October, we celebrate Polish American Heritage Month. During American history and culture, Polish people had played an important role since 1608, when the first Polish settlers arrived at Jamestown, VA. The movement began in Philadelphia, PA, and became a national celebration of Polish history, culture, and pride. A 243rd anniversary will be marked in honor of General Casimir Pulaski, Father of the American Cavalry and American Revolutionary War Hero Thaddeus Kosciuszko.

Formally recognized for the first time by a United State President in 2021, a proclamation on Indigenous Peoples鈥� Day was signed President Biden on October 11, 2021 and is observed annually on the second Monday of October. Beginning as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples鈥� Day recognizes the resistance and resilience of the indigenous communities of the United States. As stated in Biden鈥檚 proclamation, 鈥楩or generations, Federal policies systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures. Today, we recognize Indigenous peoples鈥� resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society.鈥�

Created by Rodney Wilson in 1994, LGBTQ+ History Month was designated to be commemorated during the month of October by the General Assembly of the National Education Association in 1995. Each October we celebrate and spread the love of LGBTQ+ History Month. Early on in its observation, LGBTQ+ History Month was a call to action and commemoration and has since grown to a national effort to highlight exemplary role models from the LGBTQ+ community.

On September 30, Indigenous peoples and tribal nations across North America recognize Orange Shirt Day, formally named as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 as a grassroots movement to bring awareness to the history and present impact of residential schools on Indigenous peoples. The movement started in Canada and through advocacy efforts Orange Shirt Day was established as a Canadian statutory holiday last September 30, 2021.

Bi Visibility Day, celebrated annually on September 23rd, is a day to celebrate bisexual life and raise awareness of the challenges faced by the bisexual, biromantic community. Created in 1999 by three bi activists from the US: Wendy Curry (Maine), Michael Page (Florida) and the creator of the Bisexual pride flag, and Gigi Raven Wilbur (Texas). The day was first observed at the International Lesbian and Gay Association Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa and has since grown to more than 30 countries. Also known as Bi Pride Day, Bi Day, and Celebrate Bisexuality Day, Bi Visibility Day was coined by UK bi activist, Jen Yockney, and has since been used around the world.

For those of Jewish faith, late September through mid-October represents the first month of the Jewish year, known as Tishrei. The month encompasses the two most significant holidays of the Jewish Faith, the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. During this time, please remember that our students, faculty, and staff may observe this time filled with special blessings, food, and prayer and may request time away.
